# Hafan Ifan (St John), Ysbyty Ifan

Hafan Ifan is the Grade II former Church of St John in Ysbyty Ifan, on the south-east side of the Afon Conwy. Cadw lists it for historic interest and the artistic quality of its tomb monuments.

## Overview

Cadw records that a commandery and hospice of the Knights Hospitallers was founded here around 1190, when the place was called Dolgynwal; the present name means John's hospital. Endowments were increased by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth in 1221–4. After the Reformation the church became parochial. It was restored and partly rebuilt in 1790, still with lean-to Pantglas and Foelas chapels. That church was demolished in 1858 and a simple replacement by George Benmore was opened in 1861.

The building closed for worship in 2016. It is now Hafan Ifan, a community heritage haven run independently of the Church in Wales. The listing covers the church within a rubble-walled churchyard in the village centre.
