# St Mary, Withersfield

St Mary is the Grade II* parish church of Withersfield, Suffolk, a medieval church with a late-fifteenth-century north aisle and a Victorian south aisle, in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

## Overview

Historic England lists the church (1235962, 19 December 1961). The chancel is fourteenth-century (rebuilt in the nineteenth century). The north aisle was added about 1480 and the clerestory in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Clarke and Holland built the south aisle and south porch in 1866–67 to match the north aisle and reset an elaborate early-sixteenth-century south door. The west tower is a tall fifteenth-century embattled structure with diagonal buttresses and a polygonal south-east stair turret. Materials are flint and septaria rubble with stone dressings. The listing notes a late-thirteenth- or early-fourteenth-century shaft reused as a stoup, a thirteenth-century door handle with lizards, and late-fifteenth-century north door.
