# St Andrew, Wheatfield

St Andrew’s is a Grade I parish church in parkland at Wheatfield, South Oxfordshire, in the Diocese of Oxford. The neighbouring manor house burned down in 1814; the church stands alone among the trees.

## Overview

Historic England records a fourteenth-century church restored and remodelled about 1730 for the Rudge family: render on stone rubble with stone dressings, an old plain-tile roof and a timber ridge bellcote. The plan is a three-bay nave, two-bay chancel and west porch. Blocked fourteenth-century doorways remain on both sides of the nave. Eighteenth-century round-headed windows light nave and chancel; the east end has a Venetian window. The interior keeps a fourteenth-century three-bay king-post nave roof and a plaster vault to the chancel.

Early eighteenth-century fittings include the altar table and rail, box pews (the family pew with pierced scroll-work), pulpit with tester, reading desk, and a stone font on a vase baluster. A monument to John Rudge of about 1730 is by Peter Scheemakers. The west window has eighteenth-century armorial glass; the east window is by Morris and Co. (listing c.1898; Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust also cites 1907). The church has no tower, electricity or running water. A benefice church existed by 1202.
