Overview
Historic England lists an Anglican parish church established by 1208, rebuilt about 1400, extended in the early to mid fifteenth century, gutted by fire in 1878 and restored in 1879–80. The fabric is coursed and squared lias rubble with freestone dressings, gargoyles and moulded parapets, under tile and lead roofs. The plan is nave, chancel, north and south aisles, north and south chapels clasping the chancel, north vestry, south porch and a tall four-stage embattled west tower with a south-west stair turret and a richly treated west front with a five-light window. Listing NGR is ST 30473 45468.
The interior is lofty and plastered, with neo-medieval roofs of the restoration on fourteenth-century corbels. Five-bay nave arcades have piers of four-hollows section. Medieval work that survived the fire includes the tower, arcades and window tracery, a fourteenth-century piscina in the south chapel, and the tomb recess of Sir William Cogan and his lady (c.1380). Fittings include a Jacobean pulpit and the Royal Arms of Charles II. The parish statement of significance records earlier dedications to All Saints and then St Peter; the present dedication St Peter and All Hallows dates from 1955. The benefice site notes a Christian community here before 787, when land at Huntspill was given to Glastonbury Abbey.
