# St Mary, West Horsley

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I parish church on Epsom Road in West Horsley, Surrey, in the Diocese of Guildford.

## Overview

Historic England records a church with a twelfth-century tower and west wall of the nave, a north aisle of about 1210, restoration in 1869, and a sixteenth-century aisle and chapel. The fabric is rendered rubble stone with chalk and Bath stone angle quoins, flint rubble on the tower with a wood-shingled broach spire, and a plain tile roof. The plan has nave and chancel with a north porch, a west tower and further porch, and a south-east vestry. The three-stage tower carries a broach spire that is four-sided on the tower and octagonal above, with lancets to the top stage.

The listing notes remains of a thirteenth-century St Christopher wall painting north of the west door and traces of paintings on the south wall. There is a substantial series of marble monuments. The village history states that the church was spared when the rest of the settlement was burned in 1066; the listing itself begins the fabric in the twelfth century.
