# St Michael & All Angels, Warden

St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I parish church at Low Warden, Northumberland, in the Diocese of Newcastle, near the meeting of the North and South Tyne.

## Overview

Historic England records a Saxon west tower, thirteenth-century transepts, nave and south porch of 1765, and a chancel of 1889. The tower is coursed sandstone with irregular large quoins; the remainder is coursed squared sandstone under a slate roof. The plan is cruciform with west tower and south porch. The tall tower has small round-headed windows of differing detail and a stepped-in eighteenth-century belfry with a low pyramidal cap. Transepts have thirteenth-century lancets; the chancel has a priest’s door with an enriched shouldered arch.

The listing states that the church traditionally stands on the site of an oratory used by St John of Beverley as Bishop of Hexham (685–704). H. M. and J. Taylor treated the west tower as an important member of the Northumbrian group of Saxon towers. The low round-headed tower arch has moulded imposts, possibly Roman stones from Chesters. A twelfth-century coped gravestone stands in the chancel; carved stones lie in the porch. A Grade I cross stands about three metres south of the tower.
