# St Peter, Walworth

St Peter’s is a Grade I Commissioners’ church on Liverpool Grove, Walworth, the first and best-preserved of Sir John Soane’s three London churches, in the Diocese of Southwark.

## Overview

The Diocese of Southwark and Wikipedia record a church built in 1823–25 in the wave of Anglican building after the Napoleonic Wars. It received a grant under the Church Building Act 1818: the building cost £18,592, of which the Church Building Commission contributed £9,354. Soane used London stock brick with stone dressings, tall arched windows set in recesses, and a depressed Ionic west front with cornice and balustrade rather than a pediment. The east end was altered in 1888; major reconstruction followed wartime bomb damage in 1953; the interior was re-ordered in 1982.

Historic England lists the church at Grade I (list entry 1385662). It stands in the Liverpool Grove Conservation Area and remains an active parish church. The building is usually open Monday to Thursday from 9.15am, with a café in the crypt.
