# Christ Church, Urney

Christ Church is a Grade B+ Church of Ireland parish church on Bell Road, Urney, near Strabane, County Tyrone, in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. Northern Ireland listings are not entered as Historic England or Cadw URLs.

## Overview

The Dictionary of Irish Architects records a new cruciform church of 1864–66 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners’ architects Welland and Gillespie, with a polygonal apse and a tower with broach spire. The site was given by Andrew F. Knox. The builder was McGaughey of Omagh; the cost was about £3,000, of which the Commissioners contributed £2,000. The church was consecrated on 27 July 1866. The 1730 bell of the old church was placed in the new tower. Gloine describes a cruciform plan with double transepts, polygonal apse, north tower and spire, and elaborate Middle Pointed fenestration.

Stone Database NI lists the building as HB10/08/005, Grade B+, in uncoursed rubble of local Dalradian schist with Tyrone Carboniferous sandstone and limestone. The west gable has a tall gabled porch; the north side has a square bell tower with broached ashlar spire. Rowan (Buildings of Ireland: North West Ulster) treats the church at Urney.
