# St Peter, Upper Beeding

St Peter’s is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane, Upper Beeding, West Sussex, in the Diocese of Chichester, beside the River Adur.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of chancel, nave with south aisle and porch, and west tower. The nave and tower are fourteenth-century, with some stones preserved from the priory founded by William de Braose in 1075. The chancel was rebuilt in the nineteenth century; the south aisle and porch were added in 1852 when the church was restored.

Sussex Parish Churches records that after 1075 the parish church was shared with Sele Priory, a daughter house of Saumur, dissolved in 1459 to endow Magdalen College, Oxford. Monastic buildings north of the church were later used by Carmelite friars from Shoreham; after 1538 the church was purely parochial. The 1852 remodelling was by J. Butler, who added a gabled south aisle, arcade and traceried windows. The listing NGR is TQ 19282 11134.
