St Cadfan, Tywyn

St Cadfan’s is a Grade I Church in Wales parish church on College Green, Tywyn, Gwynedd, in the Diocese of Bangor, standing in a walled churchyard on the west side of Corbet Square.

Overview

Cadw lists the church (reference 4642, designated 30 March 1951) as an early medieval clas and a substantial twelfth-century church. It was enlarged in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century into a cruciform building with a crossing tower. In 1692 the tower fell; it was replaced by a new west tower occupying one bay of the twelfth-century nave, and the north nave piers were supported by arched buttresses in the north aisle. In 1884 John Prichard of Llandaf rebuilt the church. Cadw lists it at Grade I for retaining a substantial part of its twelfth-century fabric, a rare early-medieval survival in Wales of this scale, with late medieval and nineteenth-century additions.

Pevsner called it as remarkable a church as any in Wales. The site is associated with St Cadfan and holds the early medieval Cadfan Stone. The parish site is Bro Ystumanner.
