# Truro Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Truro is a Grade I Gothic Revival cathedral by John Loughborough Pearson, the first Anglican cathedral begun on a new site in England since Salisbury in 1220.

## Overview

Cornwall’s see was revived in 1876 after centuries under Exeter. Pearson’s church, begun in 1880 on the site of St Mary’s parish church, retained the sixteenth-century south aisle as St Mary’s Aisle. The east end was consecrated in 1887. After Pearson’s death in 1897 his son Frank completed the nave, crossing tower and western towers to the original design by 1910. Fittings by Pearson include the stone reredos, sedilia, pulpit, bishop’s throne and baptistry font. Clayton and Bell supplied most of the glass. The cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Truro.
