# Bryn Sion, Trecynon

Bryn Sion (Carmel / Bryn Seion) on Mill Street, Trecynon, Aberdare, is a Grade II Baptist chapel in Rhondda Cynon Taff, rebuilt in 1899 and now used by Bryn Sion Baptist Church.

## Overview

Cadw lists Carmel (Bryn Sion) Chapel (reference 10888, designated 10 January 1991) on a sloping site flanked by Mount Pleasant Street and Margaret Street, facing down Llewellyn Street. The chapel opened in 1862 after the revival associated with Dafydd Morgan. It was rebuilt in 1899 by Thomas Roderick, architect of Aberdare, with David Davies of Trecynon as builder, at a cost of £550, and reopened on 16 September 1899. An elaborate coffered ceiling was installed in 1930. The building became a Baptist chapel in the 1970s when an immersion font was installed. Cadw lists it as a prominent nineteenth-century chapel with a particularly fine inter-war classical ceiling, in an area of unusual chapel density. Coflein records a simple sub-Classical gable-entry plan with a hall and Sunday school to the rear. The congregation has been repairing the listed ceiling and redeveloping the chapel as a community space, meeting latterly in the rear Hub on Mount Pleasant Street.
