All Saints, Thurlestone

All Saints is a Grade II* parish church in Thurlestone village, South Hams, Devon, in the Diocese of Exeter.

Overview

Historic England records earliest fabric of the thirteenth century, a major fifteenth-century rebuild, a repair of 1685 and a restoration of 1904 by G. Fellowes Prynne. Walls are roughly coursed slatestone rubble under gabled slate roofs. The plan is nave, chancel, west tower, south aisle and porch. Thirteenth-century windows survive in the chancel, with a twelfth-century font; most of the structure, including the west tower and the south chapel, aisle and porch, belongs to the fifteenth-century rebuild. In 1685 the aisle received new windows and the north wall of the nave was rebuilt.

The three-stage crenellated west tower has set-back buttresses and a five-sided stair turret on the south rising above the parapet. The west doorway is a characteristic rubble South Hams arch. The interior has a five-bay granite arcade of Pevsner A-type piers. The south chapel holds a seventeenth-century memorial to Thomas and Julian Stephens of Clannacombe. The red-sandstone tub font has chevron and cable moulding and carved honeysuckle ornament.
