# St Peter ad Vincula, Thornaby

The Old Church of St Peter on The Green, Thornaby-on-Tees, is a Grade II* twelfth-century single-cell church, restored in 1908 and rededicated as St Peter ad Vincula, in the Diocese of York.

## Overview

Historic England records a small twelfth-century building of a single cell, with fifteenth-century buttresses, a little worn decorative detail, restored in 1908, and a modern tiled roof with a double bellcote at the west end. Listed Grade II* on 19 January 1951 (NHLE 1139917). Wikipedia records that a church at Thornaby is mentioned in Domesday; the present structure is dated to the twelfth century. It was historically dedicated to St Mary Magdalene and was rededicated as St Peter ad Vincula after the 1908 restoration. Grace Pace, mother of Captain James Cook, was baptised here in 1702. The legal parish is St Mark and St Peter ad Vincula South Thornaby.
