# St Andrew, Tain

St Andrew’s is a Category B listed Scottish Episcopal church on Manse Street, Tain, Highland, in the Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland records a First Pointed Gothic church of 1887 by Ross and Macbeth: a simple four-bay rectangular church oriented east–west, in stugged snecked coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a base course. Paired lancets and triple chancel lancets light the flanks; three long lancets fill the east gable; a Y-traceried west window sits between porch and vestry under a continuous slate roof. A timber louvred ridge bellcote has a small facetted spire. The interior has an arched-braced roof on heavy corbels and pine benches with poppyheads. Stained glass is by Ballantine and Gardiner (1884, moved from the earlier church), A. L. Ward (1910) and W. Wilson (1955 and 1961).

Scotland’s Churches Trust records Episcopalians meeting in Tain Town Hall from 1877, then an iron church for seventy people opened on 17 September 1878. Local craftsmen built the present church in local stone in 1887. The adjoining rectory of 1898 is by Alexander Ross. The temporary iron church was moved to Brora and remains in Episcopal use. Scottish listing is Category B; the official designation is on the Historic Environment Scotland portal, not Historic England or Cadw.
