Overview
Cadw records a chapel built in 1862–63 to designs by F. D. Johnson of Birmingham, with James Taylor Jnr of Rhyl as builder (reference 1521; designated 16 September 1991). The foundation stone was laid in July 1862 and the chapel opened in 1863 as the English Baptist Church, founded by local Baptists and industrialists from Cheshire and Lancashire who came to Rhyl in summer; it was at first open only in the summer months. Major renovations followed in 1917 and 1951–63, especially to the front. The tall Classical three-bay front has a full-height Corinthian portico of red brick with painted freestone dressings. Cadw lists it for townscape importance in central Rhyl and for its place in the history of the Baptist movement and the growth of Rhyl as a holiday resort. The congregation later took the name Sussex Street Christian Centre.
