# St Aidan, Sudden

St Aidan’s on Manchester Road, Sudden, on the southern edge of Rochdale, is a Grade II* church of 1913–15 by Temple Moore, consecrated on 24 March 1915.

## Overview

Moore planned a random-rubble church with nave and north aisle under one roof, a separately roofed south aisle, a central west tower (completed 1931), and a higher chancel with north and south chapels, clerestory and triforium. Unmoulded nave arches rest on heavy square piers; the tower piers are massive. An external stone pulpit projects from a castellated stair turret on the south. Moore designed the east window and reredos. The parish of St Aidan Sudden and All Souls Heywood lies in the Diocese of Manchester. Historic England listed the church at Grade II* in 1985 as a significant late work by one of the leading church architects of the period.
