Overview
Historic England records a Roman Catholic church of 1862 by Benjamin Bucknall, of rubble with limestone dressings and a slate roof, comprising a nave, south transept and hexagonal south baptistry. Windows have Geometrical tracery; the west end has a rose window and a pointed doorway moulded in three orders with angle shafts. Carving is incomplete, with rough blocks intended for head stops, crockets and gargoyles. The east wall of the nave is of brick, with a blocked chancel arch and a blocked crypt arch: the chancel was never built. Interior windows have inner stone arches and slim shafts carrying roof trusses with carved braces; a pitch-pine west gallery holds the organ. A three-bay arcade opens into a vaulted north transept.
Wikipedia and the parish describe a Benedictine parish now run by monks of Belmont Abbey (formerly Downside), in the Archdiocese of Birmingham, with Sunday Mass celebrated here since the Reformation. Elgar and his wife Alice are buried about 20 metres south of the church; their tomb is separately listed at Grade II (list entry 1178469).
