Overview
Historic England records a large medieval church measuring 196 by 75 feet. The north aisle arcades, except the two west bays, date from before 1180; the north aisle was rebuilt about 1250; the south aisle was lengthened and the Lady Chapel built about 1350; the north aisle was extended about 1450; and St Katherine’s Chapel was added after 1496 by the Hall family. Sir George Gilbert Scott restored the church in 1866–75. The listing notes window frames of various periods, ballflower ornament, a crypt chapel, a north porch built to house relics, and a chained library of about 1598 over the south porch, formerly a priests’ living room.
The chief external feature is the slender crocketed spire, 282 feet 6 inches to the top of the cross, with tabernacles, lucarnes and ballflower. The church is an active parish church in the deanery of Grantham and has been described as second only to Lincoln Cathedral in the diocese.
