St Winwaloe, Poundstock

St Winwaloe’s is a Grade I parish church at Poundstock, Cornwall, in the Diocese of Truro and the Week St Mary Circle of Churches. It was formerly listed as the Church of St Neot.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church whose south transept may be of the thirteenth century or earlier, with late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century nave, north aisle, chancel and west tower, restored in 1896 by G. H. Fellowes Prynne. The west tower and west wall of the north aisle are freestone ashlar; the north aisle, south side, transept, porch and chancel are stone rubble with freestone and granite dressings. The south transept is probably the remnant of an earlier cruciform church; the north aisle was added in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century.

The dedication to St Winwaloe is recorded by 1333; it was later forgotten and the church claimed for St Neot until the dedication was restored in the 1970s. Wikipedia, following Pevsner, notes a Gothic font (probably thirteenth-century), a Jacobean pulpit, and three faded north-wall paintings: the Tree of Deadly Sins, the Warning to Sabbath-breakers and the Weighing of Souls. The Grade I Tudor Guildhouse stands at the edge of the churchyard.
