# St Wilfrid, Scrooby

The Church of St Wilfrid on Low Road, Scrooby, Nottinghamshire (Bassetlaw), is a Grade II* Perpendicular parish church in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, in the village associated with the Scrooby Separatists and the Pilgrim Fathers.

## Overview

Historic England records an early fifteenth-century parish church with an early sixteenth-century south aisle and porch, restored in 1864 and in the twentieth century, of ashlar with slate roofs and embattled parapets. The plan is a two-stage tower with octagonal spire, nave, south aisle and chapel, south porch and chancel. The interior has a three-bay nave arcade on octagonal piers and, in the aisle, two sixteenth-century oak benches with carved ends. Listed on 1 February 1967 (NHLE 1239733).

Scrooby Manor, a few yards from the church, was the home of William Brewster, postmaster and later ruling elder of the Mayflower company. A Separatist congregation met in the village in 1606–8 before leaving for Holland and, in 1620, for New England. The parish is Scrooby with Ranskill.
