# St Wilfrid, Hickleton

St Wilfrid's is a Grade I parish church in Hickleton, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield and the parish of Goldthorpe with Hickleton.

## Overview

Historic England records a church with a twelfth-century chancel arch, otherwise late fifteenth- to early sixteenth-century, renovated and added to in the nineteenth century by G. F. Bodley, with a major renovation in 1985. The fabric is ashlar limestone under Welsh slate and sheet-metal roofs. The plan is a west tower, two-bay aisled nave with south porch, and two-bay aisled chancel with north vestry, in Perpendicular style with embattled parapets. The mid-twelfth-century chancel arch has shafts, decorated abaci and zigzag ornament. A cylindrical twelfth-century font has a floral frieze.

The parish history states that the present building is essentially Perpendicular Magnesian limestone, enlarged from a single-cell sanctuary, and that the Victorian refurbishment for the Viscounts Halifax by Bodley survives largely intact. The church stands in the grounds of Hickleton Hall. Mining subsidence required underpinning in the 1980s. Wikipedia gives the parish as Goldthorpe with Hickleton and the diocese as Sheffield.
