St Wenappa, Gwennap

St Wenappa’s is a Grade I parish church at Churchtown, Gwennap, Cornwall, in the Diocese of Truro.

Overview

Historic England dates the parish church to the fifteenth century in three phases, incorporating earlier walling of about the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries, with restorations and extensions between 1862 and 1891. The walls are roughly coursed granite moorstone and granite ashlar with granite dressings, under a triple span of dry Delabole slate roofs with coped gables. The plan grew from a south aisle (possibly the original nave) northward to a new nave and south porch, then a north aisle and porch, with later eastward extensions and a nineteenth-century vestry. Windows are fifteenth-century Perpendicular openings with nineteenth-century Perpendicular-style mullions and tracery. A detached Grade I bell tower of about the sixteenth century stands nearby (list entry 1140940), built of granite and killas rubble with a pyramidal roof; the listing notes six bells hung in the late eighteenth century. A thirteenth-century granite cross one metre north of the church is listed Grade II*.
