# St Thomas, Rhyl

St Thomas’s is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church on Russell Road, Rhyl, a High Victorian Gothic landmark by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Diocese of St Asaph.

## Overview

Cadw records that Holy Trinity was judged inadequate for the growing resort by 1857 and that Scott was appointed for a new church. His plan was drawn in 1860; the building was finished in 1867, though the shingled broach spire was not completed until 1875. Clwyd Family History Society dates the foundation stone to Whit Monday, 20 May 1861, the nave opening in 1862, the chancel in July 1867, and consecration in March 1869. Fabric is roughly squared random white Cefn rubble with gold limestone ashlar dressings and a slate roof: nave with lean-to aisles, chancel, and a three-stage tower offset to the north-east over the vestry.

The interior has a five-bay nave arcade on marble octagonal piers with foliate capitals. Scott designed the pulpit, reredos and choir stalls; a marble and painted stone reredos of the Crucifixion was added in 1891. John Oldrid Scott added a gabled vestry in 1910. Stained glass is mainly by Ward and Hughes. Cadw lists the church (reference 1422, designated 21 June 1949) as a fine example of High Victorian Gothic and a prominent feature of the townscape.
