# St Thomas, Eighton Banks

St Thomas is the Church of England parish church on Galloping Green Road, Eighton Banks, Gateshead, in the Diocese of Durham.

## Overview

The Tyne and Wear Historic Environment Record records the building as a Victorian chapel of ease, shown as St Thomas Chapel of Ease on the Ordnance Survey first edition of 1850. Durham Record Office states that the parish of Eighton Banks St Thomas was created in 1863 from Gateshead Fell St John and Lamesley St Andrew; baptism and marriage registers begin in 1863, with burials from 1857. A later parish account at St Ninian, Harlow Green, likewise traces St Thomas to Lamesley parish in 1853.

The church is not on the National Heritage List for England. Parish descriptions refer to local sandstone and stained glass, with a war memorial plaque inside and a cenotaph in the churchyard (the churchyard cross is separately recorded by the Imperial War Museums). Architect and a securely dated rebuild have not been confirmed from listing or county inventory sources.
