Overview

Cadw records a church whose form is twelfth- or early thirteenth-century, with reused lancet windows of that date. An inscription on the chancel arch states that the church, supposed to have been built between 1150 and 1250, was rebuilt on the old lines by voluntary contribution in 1875–6, replacing the ancient door and windows in the new walls. The east wall and window, of later date, were not rebuilt then. The 1875–6 work was by E A Lansdowne for John James of Lansor. Surviving details also point to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century work.

The dedication is to St Tegfedd; the place was once called Merthyr Tegfedd. The church stands in an oval embanked churchyard. Cadw includes it as a church almost wholly of 1875–6 that retains earlier features and a well-preserved character.
