St Swithin, Compton Bassett

St Swithin’s at Compton Bassett, Wiltshire, is a Grade I parish church with a twelfth- and thirteenth-century interior and a fifteenth-century Perpendicular exterior, the chancel of 1865 by Henry Woodyer, in the Diocese of Salisbury.

Overview

Historic England records an Anglican parish church of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, externally fifteenth-century, with chancel and side chapels of 1865 by H. Woodyer. Materials are ashlar, with squared rubble stone to the nineteenth-century work, stone slate roofs and some Welsh slate. There is a three-stage fifteenth-century west tower, a nave with fifteenth-century clerestory and aisles, a nineteenth-century north porch, and the 1865 chancel with lean-to chapels. The interior has a three-bay fifteenth-century panelled cradle roof. The church is noted for its medieval stone rood screen; Woodyer provided gates, with figures of the Apostles on pilasters. Listed Grade I on 20 December 1960 (NHLE 1363781). The parish is Compton Bassett.
