# St Stephen, Hatton

St Stephen’s is a Grade II parish church on Church Lane, Hatton, in the Lincolnshire Wolds, in the Diocese of Lincoln. Historic England records a church of thirteenth-century origin rebuilt in 1870 by James Fowler.

## Overview

The listing describes a nave with south porch, an apsidal chancel with south vestry and a slender brick-and-ashlar bell turret with stone spirelet. Walls are red brick with limestone ashlar dressings and greenstone ashlar bands, thought to reuse stone from the medieval church on the site. Slate roofs have decorative red ridge tiles and ashlar-coped gables with cross finials. An ashlar-dressed plinth and regularly placed buttresses run around the building. The west window reuses thirteenth-century fragments, including head label stops; a north-west buttress reuses thirteenth-century crocketed and finialled gables beneath a nineteenth-century octagonal chimney.

Windows combine pointed lights with geometrical tracery. The apsidal east end has cusped lancets flanking a rectangular three-light window. The steeply gabled south porch has a richly moulded doorway. Interior accounts note a scissor-braced roof, tiled chancel and polychromatic brickwork in the chancel arch. The church stands on the site of a dilapidated medieval predecessor and is now a festival church in the Hemingby group.
