# St Stephen, East Hardwick

St Stephen’s on Church Lane, East Hardwick, near Pontefract, is an unlisted cruciform parish church of 1873 in Early English style, in the Diocese of Leeds. (The D1 title uses the spelling East Harwick; the village and parish are East Hardwick.)

## Overview

A chapel and free school endowed by Stephen Cawood in 1653 stood nearby from about 1660. That chapel was demolished in 1873. The Marquess of Ripon laid the foundation stone of the present church on 23 October 1872; Archbishop Thomson of York consecrated it on 25 November 1874. Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust records coursed local stone and a Welsh slate roof. A wooden central turret was replaced in 1927 by a castellated stone tower housing three steel bells. The Church Heritage Record states that the building is not listed; East Hardwick’s Grade II entries are a house, a farmhouse and a village pump. The parish website is ststephenseasthardwick.org.uk.
