Overview
Historic Environment Scotland lists the R.C. Church of St Sophia (LB32010, designated 14 April 1971, upgraded from B to A in March 2000) as a striking Byzantine design in red brick, with a raised internal dome, built for the third Marquess of Bute and completed in 1886. The official listing names Robert Weir Schultz as architect. Canmore and Scotland’s Churches Trust instead record Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1885–86), with Schultz possibly involved. The church is cruciform, with a central round tower under a conical red-tile roof, freely based on Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.
The interior is described as cool and white-walled, with curving arches. Bute, a notable Catholic convert, commissioned the building as an echo of the Byzantine empire for this Ayrshire town. Sunday Mass is recorded at 11.30am; the church opens by arrangement. Scottish listing is Category A; there is no Historic England or Cadw list entry.
