# St Saviour, Foremark

St Saviour's is a Grade I parish church off Milton Road at Foremark, Derbyshire, in the Diocese of Derby: a rare complete church of 1662, built for Sir Francis Burdett and still furnished largely as first fitted.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St Saviour (list entry 1045861, designated 19 January 1967). The listing records a parish church of 1662 in sandstone ashlar, with roofs hidden behind battlemented parapets: a west tower, nave and chancel on a moulded plinth. The west tower has diagonal buttresses, a four-centred west doorway and two-light bell-openings. Nave and chancel have two-bay symmetrical elevations with four-centred arched windows of five cusped lights. The east elevation has a similar five-light window and, above it, a cartouche with a coat of arms and two small figures in strapwork. A nineteenth-century brick vestry on the south side of the tower is not of special interest.

The interior retains seventeenth-century box pews, a three-decker pulpit, and a handsome seventeenth-century screen of two round-arched divisions either side of a tripartite entrance with a steep pediment enclosing a panel of seventeenth-century stained glass. Wrought-iron communion rails of about 1710 are by Robert Bakewell. The circular font has a deep cauldron-shaped bowl and a seventeenth-century wooden cover. The Derbyshire Historic Environment Record notes that the church was built completely in 1662 by Sir Francis Burdett and that bells of 1668 were cast by G. Oldfield of Nottingham.
