Overview
Historic England records that building began earlier in the fourteenth century and was enlarged in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. The town corporation held the advowson from 1585 to 1835 and carried out a major refurbishment in 1633–37, heightening the tower, renewing aisle windows and erecting a gallery. A vestry was added in 1883. A plaque records expenditure of over £3,400 in 1887–88 to designs by E. H. Sedding; further renovation followed in 1891–93 by Ashworth, with later repairs in 1932 and 1956.
The fabric is local stone rubble with Bath stone and Salcombe stone dressings under slate roofs. The plan comprises nave and chancel with transepts, north and south aisles extending into the chancel and flanking the west tower, and north and south porches. The tall unbuttressed west tower has a seventeenth-century upper stage with embattled parapet and corner pinnacles. The eastern end of the nave was rebuilt in the late fifteenth century with a new rood screen of 1496. The church remains in the parish of Dartmouth St Clement with St Saviour and St Petrox.
