# St Peter in the Wood, Appleshaw

St Peter in the Wood is a Grade II parish church in Appleshaw, Hampshire, rebuilt in 1836 on the site of a thirteenth-century chapel. It stands in the benefice of Appleshaw, Kimpton, Thruxton, Fyfield and Shipton Bellinger in the Diocese of Winchester.

## Overview

Historic England lists a plain Gothic cruciform aisleless church by T. M. Shurmer, built with a grant from the Incorporated Society for Promoting the Enlargement, Building and Repairing of Churches. The listing date of the rebuild is 1830; the parish and village sources give 1836, matching the Victoria County History. Walls are rendered, the roof slated. Most of the western arm, with thicker walls, is raised as a tower with parapet, diagonal buttresses and slender pyramid finials; there is a west porch. Pointed coupled windows light the gables, chancel and tower. The interior reads as a long narrow nave and chancel broken by segmental-pointed transept arches, with a flat segmental plaster vault and a west gallery inside the tower.

The Victoria County History notes wall monuments of 1785, 1807 and 1835 and a Royal Arms of William IV dated 1831. A Victorian octagonal font stands in the church; the porch holds what appears to be an earlier font. Appleshaw became an ecclesiastical parish in 1866.
