# St Peter, Wintringham

St Peter’s is a Grade I redundant church on Church Lane, Wintringham, North Yorkshire, described by Pevsner as the most rewarding church in the East Riding, and now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of the early fourteenth century incorporating a twelfth-century chancel, a rebuilt fifteenth-century east end, early fourteenth-century arcades and chancel arch, a late fourteenth-century tower repaired in 1818, fifteenth-century nave windows, and re-roofing and restoration in 1887. The fabric is dressed sandstone with a slate roof. The plan is a four-stage west tower with recessed octagonal spire, a four-bay aisled nave and chancel. The tower has an embattled parapet, a corbel table of masks and grotesques, and pinnacles. Listing is 1175659; grid reference SE 887 731.

Wikipedia, following the listing and Pevsner, notes oak chancel fittings added by Temple Moore in 1889–91 and roof restoration by Oldrid Scott in 1887. Furnishings include Jacobean benches, a pulpit and lectern that reuse seventeenth-century panelling, medieval carvings and stained glass. The church was vested in the Trust in April 2004; repairs began the following year.
