St Peter, Wawne

The Church of St Peter on Main Street, Wawne, is a Grade I medieval parish church in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York, with a five-light Perpendicular west window among the finest in the riding.

Overview

Historic England records a church of coursed rubble with freestone dressings, brick to the clerestory and later repairs, and slate roofs: a twelfth-century or earlier nave, an early thirteenth-century north-west tower (raised in the fifteenth century) and aisles, a thirteenth-century north porch rebuilt in the nineteenth century, and a late thirteenth-century chancel. The three-stage north-west tower has Perpendicular belfry openings; the aisled nave of four bays is crenellated, and the west window is a five-light Perpendicular composition. Interior fittings include a fifteenth-century octagonal font and a nave roof with foliage corbels and bosses. The church was listed Grade I on 7 February 1968 (NHLE 1103427).

The Meaux Abbey chronicle links the early church to William le Gros’s endowment of land and revenues at Wawne before 1160. In 1230 the Chancellor of York Minster acquired the church; Sutton was long a dependent chapel. The parish is Wawne, St Peter.
