St Peter, Upper Slaughter

St Peter’s is a Grade II* parish church on The Square in Upper Slaughter, Gloucestershire, in the Diocese of Gloucester.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church with twelfth-century fabric, a thirteenth- or early fourteenth-century chancel, a fourteenth-century tower (upper part fifteenth-century), alterations of 1822, the Witts Mortuary Chapel of 1854 by Francis Niblett, and a careful restoration of 1877 by J. E. K. Cutts. The fabric is rubble, partly coursed, under Cotswold stone roofs. The plan has a four-bay twelfth-century nave with north aisle, a tower inserted into the west bay in the fourteenth century, a south porch with an assembly of carved twelfth-century fragments, a three-bay chancel and the north Witts chapel. A fifteenth-century sanctus turret survives.

The tower re-uses Norman orders, vault and corbels, probably from an earlier tower one bay further west. Niblett’s north-east chapel, a mortuary chapel for the Rev. F. E. Witts, is in a wayward Decorated manner. Cutts’s 1877 work re-Gothicized the Rev. Witts’s Georgian preaching-box of 1822. The Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture notes that Upper Slaughter is a Doubly Thankful Village.
