St Peter, Thorpe St Peter

St Peter’s is a Grade I parish church on Church Lane, Thorpe St Peter, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln. The Church Commissioners record it as a festival church.

Overview

Historic England dates the church to about 1200, with late thirteenth-, fourteenth-, fifteenth- and sixteenth-century work and a nineteenth-century restoration. The fabric is greenstone and limestone rubble with limestone ashlar, under lead roofs with stone-coped gables. The plan has a mid-fourteenth-century west tower of three stages with angle buttresses, nave with north and south aisles, south porch and clerestory, and chancel.

The north side of the chancel shows a blocked arch to a demolished chapel and an early fourteenth-century piscina. The late fourteenth-century south porch has a doorway of about 1200. Wikipedia notes that Thorpe appears in Domesday Book with a church, and that the present building has an early thirteenth-century font. The village lies about a mile north-west of Wainfleet.
