St Peter, Theberton

St Peter’s is a Grade I round-tower parish church on Leiston Road, Theberton, Suffolk, in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

Overview

Historic England records a twelfth-century parish church with early-fourteenth, fifteenth and nineteenth-century additions and restoration. The fabric is flint with some rendering; the nave and chancel share a continuous thatched roof. The twelfth-century round west tower received an octagonal belfry stage around 1300 and a fifteenth-century crenellated flushwork parapet. The nave is twelfth-century, with a fine chevron-moulded north doorway now inside a mid-nineteenth-century vestry. The south porch of about 1470 has flushwork, carved spandrels and a canopied niche. The south aisle was rebuilt in 1848 for the Doughty family of Theberton Hall (CRSBI attributes the 1846 rebuild to L. N. Cottingham). The chancel was extended eastward around 1300; an earlier twelfth-century stone corbel table survives. Fittings include a fifteenth-century octagonal font and pulpit, triple sedilia and a trefoil-headed piscina.
