# St Peter & St Paul, Wisbech

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul on Church Terrace is Wisbech’s Grade I medieval parish church, the first building in the town to be listed at Grade I, in the Diocese of Ely.

## Overview

Historic England records a church begun in the twelfth century and substantially rebuilt later, of stone with Barnack dressings and lead roofs. The earliest standing fabric is late twelfth century. In the early fourteenth century the chancel was enlarged, a south chapel added, the south aisle widened and a second south aisle built — an unusual plan that makes the church nearly as wide as it is long. A west tower partly collapsed in the early sixteenth century; a fine tower was then built at the north-west of the north aisle about 1525, its base serving as a porch.

Monuments include the brass of Thomas de Braunstone and sixteenth-century monuments to Thomas and Etheldreda Parke and to Matthias and Jane Taylor. An extensive restoration began in 1856. Listed Grade I on 17 July 1951 (NHLE 1229992).
