# St Peter & St Paul, Upper Stoke

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Grade I parish church at Upper Stoke on the Hoo Peninsula, Kent, in the Diocese of Rochester.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of the twelfth, fourteenth, fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, restored in the nineteenth century. The fabric is ragstone and flint with plain tiled roofs. The plan is a west tower, nave with north and south aisles, south porch and chancel. The early sixteenth-century tower is of two stages with diagonal buttresses and a square-headed window over the west doorway. The nave of about 1190 has narrow aisles. The chancel has single north and south lancets and a triple-lancet east window.

Inside, a fourteenth-century tower arch opens to three-bay twelfth-century arcades: the south with round piers and scalloped capitals, the north similar but octagonal. The nave has a crown-post roof; the chancel arch is nineteenth century. The font is thirteenth century. The Kent Historic Environment Record notes that the church is mainly late Norman and early Decorated, that it was much restored in 1898, and that it suffered bomb damage in 1944. English Heritage’s Hoo Peninsula historic area assessment describes a low unfinished tower.
