St Peter and St Paul, Owmby by Spital

The Church of St Peter and St Paul on Church Lane, Owmby by Spital, is a Grade I limestone parish church of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, in the Diocese of Lincoln.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church of the twelfth century, about 1200, and the thirteenth, fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, with the chancel rebuilt in 1808 and later twentieth-century work. The fabric is coursed limestone rubble, in part banded with squared blocks, with ashlar, pantile and lead roofs: a two-stage unbuttressed thirteenth-century west tower, nave, north aisle, chancel and south vestry. The late twelfth-century three-bay north arcade has massive square bases, circular piers with bulbous-leaf capitals and slightly pointed chamfered arches. The east window is late thirteenth-century geometric tracery. Pevsner noted fifteenth-century ironwork on the west door and a crude octagonal font. The roof collapsed in 1939 after woodworm; nave, aisle and tower were re-roofed by January 1940. The church was listed Grade I on 30 November 1966 (NHLE 1165122). It belongs to the Owmby Group of parishes (Owmby with Normanby).
