St Peter & St Paul, Cherry Willingham

St Peter and St Paul is a Grade I Georgian parish church on Church Lane, Cherry Willingham, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1753 in limestone ashlar, with a shallow-gabled lead roof behind a parapet and a wooden west cupola with a lead-covered ogee cap. Nave and chancel are in one, with a smaller projecting eastern apse. The west front has a central Tuscan doorway with flanking half-columns, entablature and pediment; the inner round-headed doorway has a raised keystone inscribed 1753. Each flank has three large round-headed windows with Tuscan pilastered surrounds.

Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer notes that the church stands on a knoll above the Witham flood plain, on the site of an earlier, probably medieval, church. The National Churches Trust names Thomas Becke as founder after he acquired an estate and the patronage; the church opened for services in 1753. Font, pulpit and pews are eighteenth-century. A marble monument commemorates Becke. A later octagonal lantern is by Louis Osman.
