Overview
Historic England records a church on the site by the early twelfth century, largely rebuilt in the fourteenth century, with the tower built or rebuilt in the fifteenth. The medieval church except the tower was demolished and rebuilt on a larger scale in 1824. That nineteenth-century church, again except the tower, was destroyed by bombing in 1941. The present church was rebuilt in 1949-57 by J. Harold Gibbons.
Princess Elizabeth laid the foundation stone on St Edward the Confessor's Day, 13 October 1949. The Bishop of Rochester, Christopher Maude Chavasse, consecrated the completed church on 14 December 1957. The listing highlights the rebuilt fifteenth-century tower, a twelfth-century font from the old church, and the monument to Elizabeth (Tetty) Johnson, wife of Samuel Johnson. The parish notes that the tower was the only part left standing after the raid and that the new church incorporates flint and stone fragments from the earlier fabric.
