# St Peter, Sibton

St Peter’s is a Grade I parish church on Yoxford Road in Sibton, Suffolk, in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

## Overview

Historic England records a medieval parish church restored in 1872, comprising nave, chancel, north aisle, west tower, south porch and north vestry, in random flint and stone rubble with knapped flint to the lower part of the chancel, stone dressings and plaintiled roofs. The early fifteenth-century tower has three-stage diagonal buttresses, a later crenellated parapet with flushwork and large corner gargoyles, and a stone sundial dated 1827 on the south face. The nave and chancel have late-nineteenth-century exteriors in thirteenth-century style; the simple porch is of 1893. A late-twelfth-century south nave doorway has two orders of engaged shafts and a semi-circular moulded arch.

The listing grades the church I for surviving medieval work: a five-bay north aisle arcade with circular piers, probably re-used from nearby Sibton Abbey; a very good fifteenth-century seven-bay hammerbeam roof with angels; and four fine fifteenth-century traceried panels from the former rood screen, retaining original colouring, set in a late-nineteenth-century dwarf screen. Monuments include the north chancel memorial to Sir Edmond Barker (1676) and Lady Barker.
