St Peter and Our Lady, Glentham

St Peter and Our Lady is a Grade I parish church on Church Close, Glentham, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln, officially listed as the Church of St Peter and St Paul and long associated with a rare surviving pieta over the south porch.

Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, with a west tower rebuilt in 1756 (inscribed “FG 1756” on the west door jamb), and later work of 1855 and the twentieth century. The fabric is coursed limestone rubble with stone-coped lead roofs. The plan is a western tower, nave, north and south aisles, south porch, chancel and north chapel. The three-stage unbuttressed tower has an embattled parapet, a semi-circular west door with key and impost blocks, an oculus and semi-circular belfry lights. North and south aisles have large fifteenth-century three-light windows in deep concave reveals. The chancel has been shortened; the springing of a thirteenth-century arch remains. The fourteenth-century south porch has a deeply moulded entry. Glentham Parish Council records the historic dedication St Peter and Our Lady of Pity, referring to a fifteenth-century pieta of Mary holding the dead Christ in a niche above the porch, described as one of the few such images to survive the Reformation in Lincolnshire. The church is in the Owmby group of parishes.
