St Peter, Normanby le Wold

St Peter's is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane, Normanby le Wold, in the Lincolnshire Wolds. It stands in the Diocese of Lincoln and the parish of Normanby, and is part of the Walesby Group of Parishes.

Overview

Historic England dates the church to the early thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, with a restoration of 1868 by James Fowler of Louth. The fabric is coursed ironstone rubble and ironstone ashlar under slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles. The plan comprises a west tower, nave with north and south aisles, north porch, rectangular chancel and north vestry. The first three stages of the tower are early thirteenth century; the fourth stage, with ogee-headed bell openings, is early fourteenth century.

The south aisle retains early thirteenth-century plate tracery. Fowler rebuilt much of the north aisle, added the chancel and vestry, and reused thirteenth- and fourteenth-century masonry in the east window and vestry. Interior fittings noted in the listing include a fourteenth-century octagonal stone font on a nineteenth-century base and a sixteenth-century gravestone in the south aisle showing a face and praying hands through a quatrefoil. A church at Normanby is recorded in Domesday, though no Anglo-Saxon fabric survives.
