# St Peter, Llanwenarth Citra

St Peter’s is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church in the flood plain of the River Usk at Llanwenarth Citra, Monmouthshire, in the Diocese of Monmouth.

## Overview

Cadw records a church said to have sixth- or seventh-century origins, though the present fabric is early fourteenth century. The tower has been dated 1631, but the detail suggests it is earlier and possibly partly medieval. The whole church was remodelled in 1877 (date in the porch) after the parish was divided in 1860 into Llanwenarth Citra and Llanwenarth Ultra. Newman attributes the 1877 work to John Prichard. The exterior is a Decorated chancel with a taller nineteenth-century aisleless nave, south porch and west tower, in local sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof.

The chancel has a three-light ogee-reticulated east window, an ogee-headed priest’s doorway retaining iron hinges, and a two-light south window. The gabled porch has a fourteenth-century two-order sandstone arch. The three-stage west tower is crenellated, with gargoyles and no west door. The interior is largely of 1877 but retains a sixteenth- or seventeenth-century wagon roof to the nave. The churchyard is often approached through winter floodwater; water last reached the church in 1979.
