# St Peter, Linlithgow

St Peter's is a Category B listed Scottish Episcopal church at 153 High Street, Linlithgow, West Lothian, in the Diocese of Edinburgh. It occupies a narrow plot set back from the High Street.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland records a diminutive Byzantine church of 1928 by Dick Peddie and Todd: square in plan with a semicircular south apse, a Greek-cross interior and a single-stage tower over the crossing. Fabric is bull-faced snecked cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, base and band courses to the north face, and round-arched windows. The congregation was founded in 1912. Bishop George Henry Somerset Walpole of Edinburgh bought the site and helped fund the building in memory of his wife Mildred; a first design at 1,600 pounds was reduced to about 1,000 pounds so the church could fit a frontage of only 26 feet.

Scotland's Churches Trust names the designer as William James Walker Todd. The foundation stone was laid on 18 May 1927 and the bishop opened the church on 30 May 1928, dedicating it to St Mildred. The name reverted to St Peter in 1978, though St Mildred remains in sanctuary glass. Lighting is from above, a response to taller neighbours and the lack of side windows. Scottish listing is Category B; the official designation is on the Historic Environment Scotland portal, not Historic England or Cadw.
