# St Peter, Humshaugh

St Peter’s is the Grade II parish church of Humshaugh, Northumberland, a Regency Gothic church of 1818 by H. H. Seward, in the Diocese of Newcastle.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1818 by Seward, in tooled ashlar with a Lakeland slate roof: a broad three-bay nave with west porch, north organ chamber and a small sanctuary, of Greek Revival proportions with minimal Gothic detail. Pointed windows have Y-tracery on the nave and intersecting tracery in the three-light east window. The interior has a four-centred sanctuary arch, box pews at the front and in the side aisles, marble tablets, creed and pater boards, and two hatchments (George III and Greenwich Hospital) over the west door.

Seward was house architect to the Greenwich Hospital Commissioners, who had taken over the former Derwentwater estates. The Humshaugh Benefice notes that the church was consecrated in 1818 as a chapel in Simonburn parish, and that it is the largest of four Seward Regency Gothic churches in the area. Humshaugh later became a parish of its own. The church was listed Grade II on 15 April 1969 (NHLE 1155919).
