St Peter, Headley

St Peter's is a Grade II Victorian parish church on Newbury Road, Headley, in the Diocese of Winchester and the parish of Ashford Hill with Headley. The civil address is historically Hampshire, though the village is often described with Berkshire.

Overview

Historic England lists a church of 1868 by Edwin Doby, a spelling of the Abingdon architect Edwin Dolby, whose authorship is confirmed by the Incorporated Church Building Society file and by his published works list. It is a Victorian Gothic single cell with a north porch at the west side and a vestry south of the east end. Walls are red brick in Flemish bond with flush blue banding; there is a stone plinth around the east end and porch, brick jambs with stone heads and cills, and a prominent tiled roof with decorative ridge tiling.

Windows are coupled lancets, a three-light east window with Geometrical tracery, and a circular cusped light above two lancets at the west end. The vestry has a half-hipped roof surmounted by a bell turret. The interior, which the listing calls unaltered, has a boarded ceiling, matching red brick with blue banding, and a decorative tiled floor. The font is a square block on a circular drum with four corner columns; the reading desk is a brass lectern. The church seats about sixty.
